"Sensei Turner" has over 40 years experience in the martial arts. His traning began while in the U.K. in White Cloud Kung Fu and in Canada in Goju karate at the Rising Sun dojo.
Sensei Turner discovered Wado Kai Karate in 1990 and trained under and received his 1st Dan black belt and Instructors Certificate from Hanshi Barry Lane in 1992. During his time at Highland Wado Kai he was privileged to train with Master Masaru Shintani, the founder of Wado Kai in Canada.
After earning his 4th Dan black belt under Hanshi Lane, Sensei Turner became the co-founder and joint instructor of Caledonia Martial Arts from 2002 to 2020. In this new role, he continued to train, teach and master his art and received his rank of Kyoshi and his 7th Dan.
By founding Dundas Karate, Sensei Turner wishes to focus on the Traditional Wado Kai training. His teaching encourages students to build their confidence, motivation and concentration while embodying the concepts of respect and integrity.
In 2023, Sensei Turner was promoted to the rank of Hanshi 8th Dan and through Dundas Karate is affiliated with The Highland Wado Kai Karate - Jujitsu Organization of Canada of which Sensei Turner is one of the Vice Presidents and pioneers. Both organizations are affiliated with The World Congress of the Shintani Karate Do Foundation.
"Sensei Julie" started her martial arts journey in her father's Judo club. As the only girl and one of the smallest members, she quickly learned self-reliance and how to hold her own against the boys, her higher rank certainly aiding in that respect. Like many teenagers, she paused her training, only to re-enter the martial arts scene after a significant hiatus.
Between 2002 and 2020, she trained in Wado Kai karate at the Caledonia Martial Arts Academy, achieving her 1st Dan black belt and instructor certification in 2006, and advancing to a 4th Dan Black Belt by 2015.
Sensei Julie attributes her profound love and respect for martial arts to the remarkable mentors she has trained with and the camaraderie of her peers. She acknowledges that the advantages of martial arts training extend beyond physical fitness and technical skills. Embracing the spirit of community within the club, she, along with Sensei Tony, is dedicated to nurturing a sense of fellowship at Dundas Karate, instructing in traditional Wado Kai karate and self-defense.
“While you never lose the respect of your lineage, a new chapter can provide a much-needed stimulus so training and learning can continue.” (J. Henning)
Julie was promoted to the rank of Renshi 5th Dan in December 2021.
