From Where It Started
Traditional Wado Kai
To fully understand the art of karate, one must look to the history going back to Okinawa. In simple terms, the principles of karate were learned from practicing an art of self defense simply called 'te' which translates as 'hand'. In the early 20th century, the art was widely adopted in Japan. The word for empty in Japanese is 'kara' and so the term 'karate' was born to describe this combat system and excercise focusing on body dynamics and coordination.
Wado Kai, which means the way of peace or harmony, is a modern art of karate based on these early systems and is known for its combination with jujitsu style training which included kumite (sparring).
As a physcial art, karate is almost without equal as it uses a large number of body muscles and systems to provide all over excercise, coordination, balance and agility.
As a mental art, karate focuses on the development of self-awareness, self-confidence and self-discipline.
At Dundas Karate, the focus will be on traditional Wado Kai karate training: basic drills, kata, kumite & self-defense as possible under current health restrictions. For more information, contact us:
